DISAPPEARING STREET SCENES #1: The historic neighbourhood of Qianmen and the adjoining 600-year-old Dashilan shopping area, a short walk south of the Tiananmen Square, are often regarded as the last bastions of old Beijing charm. Qianmen is home to one of the largest, fully intact series of hutong in Beijing, while Dashilan, in its heyday, was the city's busiest commercial street, chock-a-block with food stalls, restaurants, teahouses, theatres, brothels and opium dens. Above: a hutong in eastern Qianmen. Left: A makeshift stall at Dashilan. |
