BULLDOZED #2: Many Chinese regard the Qianmen area as one of the last bastions of old Beijing charm, and home to one of the largest, fully intact series of hutong in the capital. But others regard its slum-like conditions as an embarassment. The neighbourhood, after all, is dirty, overcrowded, and a veritable fire hazard right at the door step of the country's political nerve centre. So should Qianmen be demolished for its own good? Or should it be preserved as part of the city's living history? This debate ended when bulldozers moved into Qianmen in September 2005, with workers putting up posters and banners urging the residents to relocate and help "build new Beijing, welcome the new Olympics". Dashilan experienced a similar fate months later in May 2006.
